We’ve had a few queries about whether the event is still on – yes it is. The course may well feature some residual snow and almost certainly ice with the current forecast, but we will deal with this to make a safe course. It’s also likely to be muddy too. All the fun of winter racing in one go.
Cycling Weekly have published the venue as an old venue that was originally in the BC handbook – the event takes place at Edgeside Park, Waterfoot, about 2 miles from Rawtenstall. See here.
There’s still quite a bit of snow and ice that may make local access to the venue at Edgeside Park slow going – but please use the allotted parking marked off Wales Road – please do not park on the road side.

As you can probably see from the map, it is possible to cross the river just to the east of the motorway junction down Denny Beck Lane. I used to use this bridge every day to go to and from work, but it is very narrow and has a dozen steel posts restricting its width on the way across. They are NOT wing mirror friendly. I’ve seen a Transit cross it, just, and I’ve seen people cross at 5mph in a nissan micra. If your not sure, go round, it’s only 5 mins extra.

Sunday 13th January 2008, Wyreside Park, Snow Hill Lane, Scorton PR3 1BA
A qualifying round of the 2007/08 NWCCA race league
Red Rose Olympic Scorton Scramble
13 January 2008
Wyreside Park, Snow Hill Lane, Scorton, PR3 1BA
Directions: (see map below)
From M6 exit at junction 32 for M55 but exit immediately first junction and join A6 at Broughton roundabout and travel north. Follow signs for Garstang stay on A6, travel through Barton, Bilsborrow, Brock, Catterall, Garstang and Cabus. Turn right off A6 onto Gubberford Lane opposite petrol station; sign posted Trough of Boland and The Priory (brown signs). Also look out for Red Rose directional signs (white triangles with Red Rose logo on them).
Follow road into Scorton Village turn right into Snow Hill Lane opposite the Old Barn, go past the Priory Pub / Hotel and keep on going up the hill. You will eventually see a large Red Rose banner at the entrance to the park.
Turn left through main entrance for parking in front of the main house or go straight on for further parking that is by the side of the road, which is slightly nearer the start finish. Larger motor homes may struggle to park as entrance and adjacent lanes are narrow.
The Course:
The racing takes place around the landowner’s house, and adjoining land. As we are still in the shooting season the landowner has asked spectators not to walk in the wooded areas so as not to disturb the pheasants. If you want to walk around the course please keep to the taped areas. Please also remember this is private land and a working farm so be aware that we are racing around the landowners home. The course is a good tough test with plenty of mud, fast compact lanes, mud, hurdles, mud, cobbles, oh and did I mention the mud?
We have cut out the cobbled section for the U12’s but it will still be good test for the stars of the future.
One last thing please be aware that you will need to walk along part of the course to get to the start and HQ so if you are a competing in the senior event please keep to the side of the relevant road if you arrive during the youth race. Also please do not warm up during the youth and U12 race.

In a geeky first, I’ve now got a very detailed map of the course available here in Google Earth (best, if you have Google Earth installed), or below, as a zoomable Google Map.
The map is all that’s zoomable, your legs won’t think that the course is !! The Senior event starts on the cobbled track and runs through the finish area and starts the course ANTI CLOCKWISE.

Adrian Dalgliesh has had a problem with the original venue and has just confirmed a replacement. It’s going to be at Hornby High School, which is about 5 miles from jct 34 of the M6 in the direction of Kirkby Lonsdale on the A683. The address is:
Hornby High School
Melling Rd
Hornby
Lancaster
LA2 8LH
As you come into Hornby, go round the sharp left hand bend then as you crest a small hill about 1/4 of a mile further on, the school is on the left. Parking for the race is on the left as you go in, not in the swimming pool car park.
There is limited parking, so if people can car share, this will be better for all.

The Last NWCCA event of the season at Beacon Park will now be a counting event, because John & Fiona have kindly agreed to update the league table on the day, so it will
more exciting than an X-Factor vote off….
Also Channel M will be filming the event on the day for viewing on the Internet.
Ray Pugh has to pay for the food, so anyone who hasn’t booked a meal, please phone
or text Ray on 07834 162 557 NOW.

Strong winds didn’t deter a total of 91 riders at Otterspool Park on Saturday.
The senior race saw an eventful battle between Dave Haygarth (Wheelbase) and Nathan Millar (Ipswich BC), who both forged ahead early in the race. Millar failed to take full advantage of a 40 second lead gained when Haygarth punctured mid way through the race, and punctured himself just as the Wheelbase rider had fought back just before the bell. After a tough chase, Haygarth enjoyed an easier final lap and crossed the line 55 seconds ahead of Millar.
Under 23 road racing hero Ben Greenwood (Recycling.co.uk) made his ‘cross debut and finished a healthy third after picking his way through the field in the latter half of the race. Ben’s a second claim member of Lune CC, whose Adrian Dalgleish leads the NW league, helped along by a sturdy 5th place.
In the Youth race, Martin Woffindin (Eastlands Velo) again edged out Hamish Fletcher-Cooney (Gill Cycles) by just ten seconds. First U14 was Jack Humphries (Red Rose Olympic).
Best Under 12 after almost eleven minutes of racing was Ribble Valley’s Sam Turton.

The Stadt Moers cross later this month looks like a fast course – using pretty much the same route as the first Stadt Moers event last season. John Stanistreet’s sent in this route map so you can all get visualising it to gain that extra second or two on the day !!

This in from Phil Braybrooke about the MCDG ‘cross:
“We have had to change the venue for this event due to restrictions imposed by Manchester City Council on the use Of Phillips Park. The new venue will be Clayton Vale ( same as the Madison Event at Christmas ). Clayton Vale is very close to Phillips Park and the Velodrome.
“We hope to have designed a fast couse with some intertesting technical bits !
Signing On will not be at the Velodrome Car Park but at the junction of Bank Street and Riverpark Road – There is plenty of on street parking close to signing on. There are no onsite facilities – the closest being at the Velodrome ( but don’t tell them we sent you !! )”

A good mix of wide grass and testing woodland. Because of the amount of grass, it could be lightening-fast or a mud bath…. keep an eye on the weather before this one. Trees are put to good use on the open section of informal parkland, and the tapes loop and turn you around these natural obstacles to make a fairly modern style course.

A new course for 2006/07 – A mixture of hard gravel tracks, short, sharp dismount climbs and a few bits of awkward grassland that could be slow if it’’s been raining in the days before. Expect some fast, open racing on the harder parts of the course.

How to get there:
See map – Radcliffe is a few miles north of Manchester’’s M60 Ring Road – Junction 17 is the best one to access it from. If you come in to Radcliffe from this side, head for the town centre and at the bottom of the gradual descent of New Road, where it becomes Pilkington Way at the lights at the bottom, (Just when you can spot ASDA ahead)? turn left into Outwood Road (Signed towards Kearsley and Farnworth). Outwood Park is accessed on the right on an un-named lane opposite James Street, roughly 300 metres up Outwood Road.

An old favourite resurrected in mid 1990s after a break of several years. Brought back into the NW calendar again in 2004 and used for that year’’s North of England Championships. A mixture of fast grassland, bankings, steps and stony tracks. Further modifications from the Horwich course directors
will ensure close racing conditions. The corner now known as ”DL’’s corner” after organiser Dave Leyland slipped and broke his leg in 2005, will continue to keep riders on their toes (or backsides!)

What can you say, this place has everything (except toilets, showers, etc.). If you love tree roots and rubbish and rocks cunningly hidden under leaves, then this is for you. Bart Wellens would have a cardiac arrest just walking the course. Scary stuff, but great fun. A chance to use all your well honed cross skills. Muddy bankings to run up and descend, a sprint to the top of the steps and the ‘Mur de Otterspool’s cobbled climb all add to the spice. Don’t take your eyes off the path for a second, or you’ll end up closer to it. You will never race here twice on the same course though, it’s always slightly different.
Top Tip: Don”t have an early mechanical, unless you like having to overtake people in the jungle all through the race therafter.
