The League’s also up to date now.
At least it didn’t rain on the day – well not too much. I know you won’t believe me but when we first looked at the course before Christmas it was frosty very hard under foot and fast to ride. I even thought about putting hurdles in to slow things down. I think some of the competitors would have strung me up if I’d put them in, along with the sludge that resulted from consistent rain over the last few weeks.
Lots of interesting comments:
‘One to remember’
‘That will go down in NWCCA history’
‘a good old fashioned cross course’ (from someone who didn’t actually race)
‘Give me the name of the !!#??#! course designer’.
The day got underway with the youth race, a slightly smaller field than usual as some riders were attending the national cross in Derby. Jack Bowyer (Eastland Velo) led from start to finish with a strong ride from Mike Gregg (Liverpool Century) in second followed by Tom Armstrong (Ribble Valley) continuing a good comeback following a long absence through injury. First girl was Becky Preece (Red Rose Olympic) who seems to be improving race by race. Well done to those who managed to dodge the mobile hazard (game keeper on quad bike). I ran after him as he made his way through the wooded section but he was too quick for me.
The under 12’s race was well supported as usual and was probably the toughest test of the season. Sam Turton (Ribble Valley) again came out on top with Robert Armstrong (Ribble Valley) finishing a close second. Bryn Davies coped well with the conditions for a well deserved third place. First girl was Moira Davies (Eastland Velo).
We were very grateful to James Whewell the landowner who stepped up to present the medals for both the youth and under 12’s race just before the main race got underway.
A field of over 60 riders battled against each other and the course for just short of an hour. Steven Ward (VC Azzurri) was the clear winner over 30 seconds ahead of Dave Crawley (Keswick Bikes) in second. Third place went to Alistair Robinson (Keswick Bikes). First Vet was Mick Style (Manchester Wheelers) with Vicky Ware (Keswick Bikes) being the first female adventurer home.
Thanks must go to all the Red Rose members who helped to put the event together especially Peter Fairclough, Louise Cooper, Gail Humphreys, Stuart Blackburn course building and scoring, to Ivor and Matt for providing equipment and commentary, medical support from Mandy Preece, Colin from Leisure Lakes, all the marshals from Red Rose and Salt Ayre and a big, big thank you to James Whewell for allowing us to ride through and around his home and putting up with all the vehicles that converged on the normally sleepy village.
Finally a special thanks to all the competitors who braved the extreme conditions, I only wish I had been able to take part! I’ll just have to be content with taking an average score as one of the organisers.
See you next year?

Rob Jebb (left) topped another strong day out for NW riders today byt finishing in 3rd place in the senior event at the traditionally muddy venue of Peel Park.  The NW’s Ian Bibby came in 4th in only his seconf ‘cross appearance on the season, whilst Lewis Craven finished 6th, with Paul Oldham in 9th. Other NW finishers on the tough course were Dave Haygarth, Dave Brailsford and Richard Sale.
Roy Hunt again romped to a seemingly easy victory in the over 50s event, whilst Jeff Standley was 7th. Ray Pugh and John Galway also had creditable finishes. Duncan Stuart was top NW rider int he V 40 category, finishing 19th.
In the Youth event, Martin Wooffindin finished just 3 and a half minutes down in 16th, with Melissa Bury and Sophie Gore 36th and 38th respectively, and Lewis Barry 45th.

A tough old day at work for everyone who turned up. Not exactly spectator-friendly weather, but some quality racing over a fairly uninspiring course. At least the mud didn’t stick!
Credit to all who helped out in the nasty conditions, and to Manchetsr City Council and Evans Cycles for supporting the event.

Lewis Craven (Wheelbase / Gore Bike Wear) rode a consistent and relaxed race to win the second Horwich Supacross at Leverhulme Park in Bolton. Craven’s obvious challenger was Hargroves Cycles’ Ian Field, who swapped the lead with the Wheelbase Rider until a small slip in a technical section gave Craven the opportunity to assert a few valuable seconds’ lead, which he held to the finish.
Another win for Lewis Burke (Macclesfield Wheelers) in the Youth race ahead of Martin Woffindin (Sports City Velo) and Jack Bowyer (Eastlands Velo). Jack Humphreys was the first U14, in 4th place.
In the under 12s, Bryn Davies (Eastlands Velo) was the first rider, from Ribble Valley’s Robin Armstrong and Christian Braybrooke (Eastlands Velo). First U10 was Oran Speakman (Salt Ayre).

In some appalling weather conditions and over an exceptional course in wet mud, the NW again enjoyed a good day in the latest round of the national trophy.
With two strong foreign riders taking the first two places, Lewis Craven’s 5th and Rob Jebb’s 6th (both Wheelbase/ Gore Bike Wear) were excellent results at this level. The down side was Paul Oldham’s disappointing 10th after suffering from the driving, freezing rain.
Roy Hunt (Kinesis) braved the elements again to take first place in the over 50 vets, with his daughter Amy retaining her National Trophy lead with third place on the day.
Melissa Bury (Eastlands Velo) finished 9th in the Youth girls event, taking her to 6th in the trophy standings so far.

Junior Ben Roach made the trip from the East Midlands worthwhile when he won the race oin Saturday at Otterspool Park. Roach finished clear by almost a minute from Richard Wilkinson (SIS Trek), with father Phil Roach (V45) coming in third.

The NW league battle between Dave Brailsford (Horwich, pictured left) and Rob Pugh (Liverpool Century, right) stayed as close as ever, with them finishing within 15 seconds of each other, 4th and 5th respectively.
Martin Woffindin (Sport City Velo) tok the Youth race by 25 seconds, whilst Sam Turton took a predictable victory in the U12s

The 3rd event of the Evans event took place on Saturday 3rd November with the best attendance of all three events. The feature of the series has been a new course for each event. The course planners has been at work with the U14 / 16 / Adult course including a 32 steps over which the bikes had to be carried and a fast technical down hill rollercoaster section.
There was little time for recovery in the 5 minute laps. The U12 course was shorter but still included 12 steps.
The winners from this event where Sam Turton from Ribble Valley in the U12 and Lewis Burke from Macclesfield Wheelers. There was also a ‘lucky dip’ prize draw so all entrants where in with a chance of winning
The facilities at this end of Clayton Vale are excellent with the local community group setting up a cafe in the newly refurbished community centre which has changing and toilets – the only limitation is parking
Big thanks to Mark at Evans Cycles, Manchester, who put a huge amount of work in getting the event off the ground and providing the £300 of gift certificates as prizes. They have committed to running the event next year

The NW Senior Team missed out by just four points to East Midlands, coming a disappointing second place. One particuly webmaster who is writing this is feeling particularly gutted about that, having lost those places in the last half of the race.. Sorry folks.. I slogged my guts out, but it wasn’t to be.

In the ever changing conditions the course went from slippy and wet to sticky mud, following hard rain.
The first lap was lead by fast starting Stef (Horwich CC) with team mate Dave Brailsford taking overr on lap two. Keith Murray (Wheelspin Cycles / Scott) soon took the lead and slowly increased his gap throughout the race to win, leaving Brailsford and Rob Pugh (Liverpool Century) in 2nd and 3rd.
Murray’s victory was assured barring any mistakes. Pugh then left Brailsford with two laps remaining to take second place.

After a fast start forced by visitor Keith Murray (Wheelspin Cycles / Scott), a leading group of four riders established itself at the head of a great circuit in Otterspool Park. Murray’s company was Dave Brailsford (Horwich), Rob Pugh (Liverpool Century), and Mark Leyland (Wyre Forest CRC).
Brailsford rode one of the run-ups after two laps, forcing Murray to chase, dropping the other two riders. Murray never got back on terms, rolling a tub in the process of chasing series leader Brailsford. Rob Pugh eventually distances Mark Leyland to get a clear 3rd place.

On a brand new venue hastily re-arranged within four days, the Lune CC put on a great series of races.
On a short but technical senior circuit, Dave Haygarth (Wheelbase / Gore Bike Wear) enjoyed a realtively trouble-free victory over John Shaw (Ace RT / Impsport) and the unlucky Dave Brailsford (Horwich CC). After a fast start, a broken saddle rail forced Haygarth into an early bike change, letting Brailsford up to join him, but it was Brailsford’s turn for bad luck, with the first of two punctures a lap later. Shaw was the first veteran and Joe Allen took his second junior victory of the weekend.
The Wheelbase rider was pleased to be back on the bike after organising the previous day’s cyclocross in Radcliffe. “It’s a tiring business and a very long day organising the race” said Dave, “but I knew I’d have fresh legs today and I was determined to make the most of it – my wife, daughter, mum and my mother in law were watching today – my family home’s just up the road in Kirkby Lonsdale – so I couldn’t afford to mess up!“.
In the youth race, Martin Woffindin made the most of the fast but slimey grass conditions and dismounts to take a well deserved Victory.
Sam Turton made it two in two days with an impressive victory in the U12s race.
