Liverpool Century Cyclocross, Beacon Park, 24 01 2010

A smaller field of just over 50 riders took part int he final event of the NW league, and much of the deluge of riders cramming in for the postponed national championships didn’t show.

However, Tom Moses (Jun) and Matt Denby (V40) added a bit of spice to the field, taking first and third places, and separated by NW rider Richard Kent.

Brockhole ‘cross (Lakes RC) – FINAL RESULT

Update: FINAL result now here

Message in from Louise Gore, who is tasked with trying to unpick a few problems with the results from the November event…

I finally received the Brockhole lap score sheets yesterday and have come up with a provisional result (however there are still errors to be resolved – so don’t update the league tables just yet)

Please could you email the provisional result to those you normally send the league tables to, and invite the riders to send in any queries to me by Friday 15th January at the latest.

In particular I would urge the following people to contact me as I have unresolved queries for them:

Paul Hudson (32), David Switzer (45), Matthew William-Jones (100), Phil Braybrooke (123), Paul Simpson (175), Morgan Donnelly (197) and Richard Wood (226/496).

On the last lap a number was recorded twice. In order to make sure that I have the correct number of finishers I have listed below all riders that I have recorded as DNF and request that these riders confirm that they Did Not Finish:

Dean Smith (1), Clive Wilkinson (13), Graham Kennerley (21), David Switzer (45), Kevin Walford (46), Jack Bowyer (48), Scott Wilson (56), Mick Speirs (79), David Boulder (98), Duncan Stuart (179), John Hols (184), Paul Andrews (188), Keith Ashbridge (191), Sam Clarke (199), Sean Hoban (235) and Richard Leafe (246)

Anyone not shown in the results that should be, needs to let me know.

A lot of these riders may not be registered for the league, but I need their input because their numbers may have been mixed up with some of our league riders. Maybe you could ask Dave Haygarth to display this info on the website for those who are not on the email list.

Rhyll CC Cyclocross 20 12 2009 – Results and report

Sunday’s Rhyl CC Cyclo-Cross at Glan Morfa saw over 50 riders of various ages taking part in the only North Wales round of the North West England League.

Every competitor deserved a medal in awful conditions of driving rain, hail and finger-numbing cold temperatures, but there was a fiery finish to the main race as young junior Lewis Burke and 37 year old Paul Bethell (both Macclesfield Wheelers)battled for the honours. The pair had been wheel to muddy wheel all race long with Burke eventually taking the chequered flag by a couple of bike lengths. Rhyl CC’s Andy Bowyer did well to just beat the experienced Mark Baker (Deeside Olympic) of Prestatyn in 15th and 16th and VC Melyd’s Simon Price was 23rd.

Mayor of Rhyl Glyn Pickering sent the riders on their way for all three events supported by Rhyl Town Council and Denbighshire County Council, and Ashley Clitheroe (Red Rose Olympic) was best U16 just ahead of Welsh champion at U14 level St.Asaph’s Dylan Kerfoot-Robson (Rhos-On-Sea CC), and U10 Sol Kerfoot-Robson won the U12 race in fine style riding on a sticky bed of slime and mud. The all conquering family also had daughter Seren claim 1st place in the U12 girls.

Liverpool Mercury Cyclocross – Stadt Moers – 05 12 2009 – Updated with full report & Result

The Stadt Moers cross was run off in dry conditions, albeit the ground was sodden in a few places from the constant rain over the last few weeks. The course was altered from previous years in that we didnt use the paths and tarmac at the East end of park, but utilised new tracks kindly provided by the Rangers. Stronger riders could ride all of the course, but with four climbs, adverse cambers and some water splashes it kept riders on their toes.

The Youths race was on shorter all rideable course was a display of strength from Red Rose Olympic , led home by Jack Humphries, with Ashley Clitheroe and Andrew Noxon in 3rd and 5th places. Sport City’s Bryn Davies and Christian Braybrooke took the first two places in the U14, with Jessica Wilkinso n BNECC winning the U14G prize, just behind Becky Preece who won U16G.
The U12s race was won by Matt Wallis of Eastlands Velo from Sam Hollingworth of Red Rose ,with Oran Speakman of Salt Ayre Cog Set 3rd. Kim Baptista of Eastlands Velo was 4th and first U10 rider.

Jonny McEvoy of Candi TV -Pinnarello, who lives quite close to the course was a clear winner of the Senior race by almost two minutes to Richard Kent Colnago/Microshift/Skins, with visitor Matt Denby V40 of Zepnat RC 3rd and futher 1.15 back.

Another newcomer to NW events was Rob Smails of Mid Devon CC was 4th ahead of Roy Hunt (Colnago/Microshift/Skins). Paul Bethell was the next regular NW followed by Martin Woffindin who was first Junior. Mechancial problems affected a few riders with 5 DNFs ,well down on last weekend, including Lewis Burke who dropped out after two laps, and Joe Allen who broke a chain.

A video was taken of all three races by Stuart Turton for showing in full at the NWCCA presentation event at Beacon Park on the 24th January. Excepts will be posted shortly.

Wheelbase Cyclocross, Haslingden, 28 11 2009 (Updated with report & images)

A grand day out in the mud…

Haslingden’s first ever cyclocross race took part in Victoria Park in mud, glorious mud, but on a dry, cool November day. The second Wheelbase event to be run in the borough of Rossendale in two years, Haslingdon’s historical park saw some top action from the UKs top cyclocross riders. In contrast to the bright sunshine over crisp and frozen snow at last year’s event in Waterfoot, the parcours was wet mud after a full ten days of rain.

Organiser Dave Haygarth had revised the course drastically in advnace of the event when it became clear that the rain had got its way: “The challenge is to make it a race – no-one really minds the mud, but technical parts of the course were just no longer necessary when the simpler bits were going to get so badly cut up”.

So – on the day – a record 118 riders signed on in the Senior event, and you don’t get much bigger names than Paul Oldham, Rob Jebb, Ian Bibby and Jonny McEvoy – all of whom have represented Great Britain in Cyclocross in the last few years. Oldham was always going to be the favourite for the £100 first prize and pulled no punches, leading from the gun and easing away from the field bit by tiny bit on each of the 7 min laps. The fight behind from Bibby and Jebb was never going to allow Oldham to relax for long, and their tough battling in contrasting styles was a joy to watch. Bibby stayed ahead of Jebb in the dying stages and enjoyed day one of his return to ‘cross for 2009 (all three were to do battle the next day in Richmond).

Meanwhile, McEvoy – relying on only one bike – rode with utter guts and determination to destroy the hopes of some riders behind him with full pit crews. Veteran Matt Denby took the top vets prize and 5th position overall. Wheelbase’s Sue Clarke came home the first lady – another pre-race favourite living up to expectations, whilst the top Junior was Sport City Velo’s Martin Woffindin.

In the Under 12s race, Matt Walls of Eastlands Velo won the first boy, whilst the first girl home was team mate Kim Baptista. The following race on a course that was already showing signs of wear and tear was the U16s race, won by long distance visitor Dylan Kerfoot-Robson (Rhos on Sea) and first girl home was Hannah Layland, (VC St Raphael).

Lakes RC Brockhole Cyclocross 8 November 2009 UPDATED WITH RESULTS

Fun day in the mud for all on the shores of Lake Windermere

Note from the organiser

The organisers would like to apologising for the delay in finalising the results. Unfortunately due to course conditions, riders loosing race numbers during the race and the mud cover the numbers we have had to spend hours scrutinizing the laps, etc.

Many thanks for make a great event.

Also please note that the riders with the non league numbers i.e. 433+ have had to have their numbers changed, due to the programme for the results but hasn’t made any difference to the results.

Boggart Hole Clough Cyclocross 18 October 2009 (results, report, photos)

Report by Mick Style, Manchester Wheelers.

Thorough-bred cross-man Lewis Craven (Wheelbase / Cannondale / Gore Bike Wear) returned to Boggart Hole Clough for Manchester Wheelers cyclo-cross on Sunday and looked comfortable cruising to victory, mining a rich vein of form from 12th in the National Trophy last week in Derby and 4th in the Three Peaks.

Lewis established himself with a clear lead on the first lap, rode a controlled race and was never troubled for his arms-aloft win. 2nd and 3rd was a closer fought affair – Paul Bethell (Macclesfield Wheelers) stayed within a couple of bike lengths of Rick Kent (Colnago/Microshift/Skins) for the first 3 laps but Rick gapped him coming onto the grassy section near the start/finish at the top of the course, and increased the gap throughout the remainder of the race.

First Junior home, Lewis Burke (Macclesfield Wheelers) came in 6th overall and wily dog Dave Headon (Horwich CC) won the Vets in 9th place overall, pushing first Under 23 Luke Beswick to 10th. If Luke can match his bike reliability with his form, then he’ll be placing further up the field.

The overall lead in the North West League is shaping up to be a fine battle – talented young pretender Lewis Burke is currently showing us all how it’s done, but old hand Paul Bethell is breathing down his neck and took a few points off Lewis on Sunday. And don’t write off Rick Kent – he clearly has the talent to contend too if he races enough races. I feel a bit of a ‘Book’ being run!

A real highlight of the event was firstly the overall Senior race numbers with 104 starters – over 20 more than last year – and secondly 10 juniors riding the Senior race, double last year.

We had extended the course this year for a second swoop into the trees at the top of the clough, with a few roots, twists and off-camber areas to contend with – well received judging by riders’ comments after the race.

Chris Lawless (Eastlands Velo) tussled with Jack Humphreys (Red Rose Olympic) for a couple of laps before pulling away to win the Youth Race. Christian Braybrook (Sport City Velo) took 5th place overall but was first U14 over the line. Hannah Leyland won the Youth Girls category and Jessica Wilkinson was first U14 girl.

Matthew Wallis from local team Eastlands Velo won the U12’s from visiting Sol Kerfoot Robson (Rhos on Sea) who was first U10. Matthew Baptista kept the Eastlands flag flying for the U8’s. And let’s hear it for Ella Dorrington who is fast learning her dad’s cross skills and Lenny Lomas who stayed focussed on the Haribo waiting for him at the finish for most of the 15 minutes race – they’re both just five!

Meanwhile back in the Senior race, the Boggart, a mischievous imp-like creature who lives in the Clough and who lends his name to the Park, was busy breaking the chains of unsuspecting riders like Jason Ragg (Manchester Wheelers) and local Danny Reilly, both DNF. Sorry lads, I’ll have a word….

Note
Some of the names and clubs in the results below have had top be guessed because of shoddy handwriting on the signing-on sheets – please be aware of this when you sign on!!

DRAFT results here (web page), along with this note from the event organiser:
“This result has 3 riders missing at present because I need to go back through the score sheets and work their places out because they don’t appear correct.
The under 12’s will be completed tonight, as will the missing three riders above, two of which are Phil Bibby and Ms Underhill of Weaver Valley as I remember.”
