News
A brand new venue and a cracking, testing course will make for another great day’s racing on Saturday the 28th November in Victoria Park, Haslingden. Following last year’s epic snowy warzone of Edgeside Park, a new venue has been uncovered by organiser Dave Haygarth.
Working again with Rossendale Borough Council, Dave and the Wheelbase team have found a venue with the right combination of parking and a decent testing circuit, and the new course, coming in at 1.2 miles, will make a great ‘arena’ cross, with 75% of the racing visible from the Finishing area, a tree-lined ashphalt ‘boulevard’ – or as near as Rossendale gets.
The parking for the event is a 250 metre ride from the park at Haslingden Sports Centre, and the now familiar sight of the Wheelbase.co.uk van and Gazebo will be the main signing on and spectator arena for the event in the park itself.
North’s best do battle.

Riders to have confirmed their intentions to ride so far include current National Trophy leader Paul Oldham (Hope Technology) [above right], but any hopes of an easy win will be blasted away by Wheelbase.co.uk / Cannondale’s Rob Jebb [above left], who will find the course and soft conditions much to his liking. The £100 first prize in the senior race won’t be an easy hour’s work for anyone, on the course that features almost everything a ‘cross course can throw at you.
Two organised pre-rides will be taking place for anyone interested in checking out the new course. Dave Haygarth will be taking riders round the park’s twists and turns on Wednesdays 18th and 25th November at 12:30 pm – see the UK Cyclocross site for more details.

The event will be held at Brockhole, Lake District Visitors Centre, Windermere, Cumbria. We have been given kind permission from the Lake District National Park for the use of this venue.
This is the first time any event like this has been held there, the course will be varied with grassland, wooded sections, and gravel paths, part of the course will be along the side of Lake Windermere with the backdrop of The Langdale Pikes.
Because this is the first time Brockhole has been used for a Cyclo Cross, we ask the riders to be careful and only use the marked out course, our intentions is to apply for a National Trophy event in 2010. The course is on a grade two listed garden and is an important part of the Lakeland scenery.
There is plenty of parking (tarmac), toilets and a changing room, but at the moment no showers.

In November 2009 Go-Ride Racing will start at Clayton Vale Park for the new Cyclo-Cross season. Go-Ride Racing events are designed to offer entry level, local competition for young cyclists under the age of 16; strictly aimed at novice riders, without a racing license. The racing will take place at Clayton Vale Park near the Manchester Velodrome. Two courses have been selected by British Cycling Staff for an enjoyable experience for all age ranges.
Coaching will take place on the course for all riders wishing to take part in the racing; coaching sessions will be conducted by British Cycling Go-Ride Coach Tom Hodgkinson. This session also offers the opportunity for all club based coaches to assist; developing their personal coaching practice and course knowledge for other riders who are not on the coaching sessions. The coaching session for riders will develop rider’s course knowledge, group racing skills, gear selection, descending, ascending, and riding to the conditions.
Go-Ride Racing will take place the week after a coaching session, riders have the opportunity to take part in three races over the day; Time Trial, Team Relay, and Mass Start event. Riders have the opportunity to accumulate points over the three races to be overall leader, riders will have the opportunity to race over three series the fourth being the Go-Ride Racing Manchester Championships.

Why?
Go-Ride Racing is to be used for novice riders who are looking to step up to regional level racing, each Cyclo-Cross event in Manchester will lead to open regional events in the North West. Riders will develop their skills in a non competitive coaching session (week 1), use their skills against others in their own age category at Go-Ride Racing (week 2), and have the opportunity to progress from these races to open regional events.
Go-Ride Racing has many benefits for young riders; they include:
• Introduction to racing: developing rider’s application of skills learnt in Go-Ride coaching sessions within the club.
• Silver Membership and Racing License: all riders that progress from Go-Ride Racing into open regional events will receive free Silver British Cycling Membership.
• Continuous Personal Development: Go-Ride racing in year two will be open to clubs to run, all club coaches have the opportunity to develop their knowledge of Cyclo-Cross, coaching in a challenging environment, and officiating at events.

The NWCCA Committee has agreed to formally issue League numbers for the following reasons:
- Aid to judging, by the provision of arm numbers, in addition to back numbers.
- Make identification of riders easier to officials.
- Speed up the signing on process.
- Enable pre-printed signing on sheets for affiliated riders.
- Avoid duplicated or non conspicuous numbering problems.

Yes… I know it’s over the border on the nasty dark side, but only a few miles from North West (like the Rhyl Cross) so I thought we’d better report on the race…
It’s hard to imagine a tougher climb than the cobbled muur that met riders on the side of the woodland in Todmorden. Riders expecting an easy day out on relatively hard frosty ground (yes… me included) had to dig deep into their kit bags to get their climbing legs out.
A fun course and some brilliant turn outs for all three events.
The initial results are below for the top 22 in the senior event – full results to follow ASAP.

Zepnat team rider Jon Watson has been in touch with us asking if we can put the word out about a pair of wheels he left behind at last week’s Rutland National Trophy event. Jon’s team-mate Matt Denby broke his leg at the event and in the dash to get Matt to hospital, Jon left behind a pair of Mavic Mach 2s on Hope hubs with Dugast tubs.
Someone must have picked them up – if you can help, please contact Jon on Jon@hot-wheels.co.uk

The organisers of the inaugural Hit the North didn’t think that the race was muddy enough so we decided to organise another one in the middle of winter.
Hit the North – Winter Sprinter is a “2 hour-plus-one-lap” bike race around Philips Park and Waterdale, North Manchester. There is no restriction on the type of bike as long as it has two wheels and one rider. The course has a bit of everything. 3 miles of fast hardpack, woodland single track, tarmac, raised decks, steps and probably quite a lot of mud.
Feb 7th 2009. 10:00am – 12:00 noon, sign in from 8:30am.
In an attempt to keep the costs down there will be no camping or shower, but you will be able to buy some hot food and drinks. We’ve also booked the local brass band for added Northern ambience ;-)
The race HQ and start will be in Philips Park, Whitefield, Manchester M45 7QJ
Again, the profits from the race all go to charity. Our chosen charity, BTCV, work at maintaining the British countryside including Philips Park (and they are letting us use their office and toilet for a very reasonable price).
See website for more details of the race, forum, preview rides and the entry form (online entry coming soon). www.hitthenorth.net
