This in from Colin Colin Humphreys, Red Rose Olympic:

With the rainy summer nearly over its back to the cold and rainy cross season and for those of you who remember the Scorton Scramble we now have something completely different to offer.

The Red Rose Olympic Avenham Cyclo-Cross race opens the North West calendar on Saturday 18th of September at Avenham Park in Preston. It’s a fantastic venue for cross including grassy climbs and descents, stairs, off the bike short sharp climbing, hurdles, trails and a little tarmac for recovery. We’ve even got a viaduct over the river to play with!

Full Course Map Here (pdf)

It’s taken a lot of persuading to allow access for a cross race and many hours of negotiating with council officials, contractors, parks and gardens staff and many others. Avenham is a Victorian listed park so we have to be careful to ensure they let us back in. It’s essential that we keep to the marked out course to reduce any damage. It’s a public park so we also need to be aware of the general public wanting to enjoy the park and the racing during the day. The cross races kick off an eight day festival called ‘Preston on the Move’ so there will be other events throughout the weekend so let’s put on a good display. We will have a race village area so bring your club and or team gazebos. There will also be a Go-Ride Racing event for novice U16 riders plus media and film crews recording the event for TV and radio. It’s a Cat A race so we have decided to have both pre and enter on the day, available. I would advise you to get your entries in asap as the council may put a cap on the numbers. If you are a regular North West rider don’t forget you numbers.

Signing on is in front of the new Pavilion building next to the river.

Programme of events

Race 1- 11:00am Youth Race (Under 16 full course 30 minutes plus 1 lap, £5 pre entry, £6 on the day)

Race 2- 12.:00 noon Under 12′s (Short course 15 minutes plus 1 lap, Free to enter)

Race 3-1:00pm Juniors, Women, Seniors, Veterans (full course 60 minutes plus 1 lap, £10 pre entry, £12 on the day)

Race 4- 2:30pm Go-Ride Racing (Under 16 novice riders)

Entries on the usual BC entry form to Colin Humphreys 25 Kennington Road, Fulwood, Preston, PR2 8BT (Cheques made payable to Colin Humphreys)

Finally I would be really grateful for anyone who can help out on the day. Give me a call on 07947069962.

Dear All, here is a summary of the recent committee conference call which will affect forthcoming events:

NWCCA numbers – Ian Small has ordered new numbers 251 to 300 for the use of non registered riders (guests or first timers). The existing NWCCA registered riders will use numbers from last year which are roughly 1-149, plus 171-175. There are a number of numbers that went missing from the Beacon Park event in January to which we are going to have to replace 100 in quantity as despite efforts to find, have disappeared. Ian to order 150-250.

If a rider forgets their registered number they will be allocated a temporary one on the day. If they loose a number, they will have to pay for a new number as stated last year.

Commissaires: A second commissaire will be appointed or if no registered one is available, a competetant official, focused mainly in observing proper use of pit areas. It is mandatory for the commissaires to be from another club to the promoting club.

Official’s expenses: The Organiser is to offer petrol expenses to the Results official (usually Louise Gore) at a rate of £15 per event. The NWCCA will provide petrol expenses to the Chief and Assistant commissairse at the rate of £15 and £10 respectively. This will be reviewed at the AGM to check on the effect on the NWCCA balance sheet.

Results recording: The NWCCA will purchase a notebook ,similar to Len’s who has kindly offerred the loan of for the first couple of races. The spreadsheet will be used at all events and two pairs of recorders will be required at the finish line, and another person to read out the lap details to the spreadsheet input person, near to the finish being fed the lap sheets. This will aid getting results out more quickly. This arrangement worked well at the Century event with Len’s spreadsheet.

Colin Humphries is to trial the use of “Taptiming” on an iphone at the Red Rose event. Note entries in advance please as its CatA and likely to be oversubscribed.

Len has requested training to a Grade A commissaire, contact Louise Southerly, Education Manager at BC.

Update: FINAL result now here

Message in from Louise Gore, who is tasked with trying to unpick a few problems with the results from the November event…

I finally received the Brockhole lap score sheets yesterday and have come up with a provisional result (however there are still errors to be resolved – so don’t update the league tables just yet)

Please could you email the provisional result to those you normally send the league tables to, and invite the riders to send in any queries to me by Friday 15th January at the latest.

In particular I would urge the following people to contact me as I have unresolved queries for them:

Paul Hudson (32), David Switzer (45), Matthew William-Jones (100), Phil Braybrooke (123), Paul Simpson (175), Morgan Donnelly (197) and Richard Wood (226/496).

On the last lap a number was recorded twice. In order to make sure that I have the correct number of finishers I have listed below all riders that I have recorded as DNF and request that these riders confirm that they Did Not Finish:

Dean Smith (1), Clive Wilkinson (13), Graham Kennerley (21), David Switzer (45), Kevin Walford (46), Jack Bowyer (48), Scott Wilson (56), Mick Speirs (79), David Boulder (98), Duncan Stuart (179), John Hols (184), Paul Andrews (188), Keith Ashbridge (191), Sam Clarke (199), Sean Hoban (235) and Richard Leafe (246)

Anyone not shown in the results that should be, needs to let me know.

A lot of these riders may not be registered for the league, but I need their input because their numbers may have been mixed up with some of our league riders. Maybe you could ask Dave Haygarth to display this info on the website for those who are not on the email list.

Hambleton Road Club are promoting the 5th round of the CXNE league (Cyclo Cross North East) on Sunday 3rd January 2010 at Croft Motor Racing Circuit near Darlington .

The race offers an exiting opportunity to ride at this popular motor sport venue and is open to riders of all abilities, so if you fancy burning off a few of those excess Christmas Calories, or are a seasoned Cyclo Cross rider fighting for League positions then this is the race for you! The fast, flowing nature of the course will also allow Elite riders to fine tune their preparations for the national championships, held in Birmingham the following weekend.

The races start at 10-30am for the Under 12s, 11-00am for Youth riders with the Senior/Vets/Ladies/Juniors race taking place at 12-30pm. All races are electronically timed, producing immediate results that show finishing position, overall time and individual lap times.

The modern facilities at Croft Circuit allow for ample parking, indoor signing on and changing facilities. The race is spectator friendly with refreshments being served from 09-30am onwards. Toilets for riders and spectators will be open throughout the day.

Update from race organiser Dave Headon

LEVERHULME PARK event 29th Nov 2009.

the race is definitely on as the calander details

it’s wet like everywhere else but will be ride able and we believe exciting and fast in many places

we are making full use of the park tracks, dryer areas around the trees on the top field, and two bits of tarmac

it will be fully taped off as usual

we will avoid any significant uphill grass sections as these are impossible to ride and boggy [boooooo - webmaster]

there will be the usual WIDE, SAFE and LONG grass start

same changing rooms as usual

same signing on area as usual

double back to back pit

it’s a cat B event so more ranking points for those that do well [and lots of better riders committed to the YCCA event in Richmond means even more points on offer here!!]

the usual exciting under 12′s course as well, but likely to be a bit different, but using the same areas.

we expect a HUMDINGER and we know the riders never disappoint!

All welcome as always, the more the merrier!

Continue over next roundabout (Thornes Park is on your left here) to first turning on your left (at 2.1 miles) (Park Ave.) Follow this minor road to the T-junction at the end. At the end, turn left onto the main road, then first left into Thornes Park (just before Pelican crossing). Signed Thornes Park Centre

From MI (travelling South) – J40 (A638)

(It is easier to travel down to J40 than come off at J41) At Junction 40 turn off left towards Wakefield along A638.

After a set of traffic lights there’s a big VW garage on your left and Netto on your right. Go through pelican crossing.

After Motormania on your left, move into right hand lane at Give Way and follow signs for A642 to Huddersfield (almost back on yourself). Follow for ¼ mile then turn left into Thornes Park (just before Pelican crossing). Signed Thornes Park Centre

Go through Horbury Bridge. Stay on A642 (don’t follow signs to Horbury Centre). Go under motorway. Continue past cream and yellow tower block on right (at 0.9 miles after motorway). Just after Big Booze on left and after pelican crossing (at 1.2 miles after motorway) turn right into Thornes Park. Signed Thornes Park Centre.
