Macclesfield Supacross: Dixon in top form

Phil Dixon (Science in Sport) took his second consecutive win at Macclesfield’s South Park – this time in more challenging company. Dixon won by a comfortable margin over Liam Killeen (Specialized) and Rob Jebb (Wheelbase).

North of England Championships

Another great day for NW riders – who took the first three places in the senior event and the team prize, third year running, for Wheelbase.

Ian Bibby (SIS) rode a strong and confident race, waiting until the race on a muddy, challenging course at Bishops Burton college had settled down before riding away from Colne’s Paul Oldham (Hope). Rob Jebb (Wheelbase) stayed in close contact but couldn’t close the gap on Oldham.

Cumbrian Marie Stuart was the second woman, whilst NW riders took 1st places in U12 boys, U12 girls, and U10 boys. Martin Woffindin was best NW rider in the youth race, having to settle for the scraps left by a Team Marie Curie 1-2-3. Jack Bowyer took 1st place for the U14 boys and Melissa Bury finished 2nd for the U14 girls. Dan Wheelan also just missed out on 3rd place in the U14 boys, taking 4th place.

Visitor from the East pillages at Stadt Moers

Whilst the top NW riders battled it out at Mallory Park in the National Trophy (see separate story), Matlock CC visitor Lee Shunburne made off with first place in the Liverpool Mercury ‘cross at Stadt Moers. Short of a Notts and Derby League race to ride with the National Trophy race in nearby Leicestershire, Shunburne took an early lead and made his trip worthwhile.

The best of the NW riders was Will’s Wheels’ John Shaw, whilst Stuart Green enjoyed a welcome return to the podium.

In the Youth race, Ribble Valley’s Lewis Balickyi upset Martin Woffindin’s run of form, whilst Ribble Valley team mate Sam Turton again took the U12 race. Tom Armstron was first U14.

Macclesfield Cross – 5 November

IMG_0001

Here’s some photos from Jon Williams.

Full results now in below (click ‘More’).

The first of Macclesfield Wheelers’ two annual cyclo-cross events, incorporating the Post Office national championships, was organised by Mark Bethell on Sunday 5th Nov and held in the south park Macclesfield.

87 lined up for the main event but prior to this there had been a noticeable increase of U12’s and U16’s with 24 U12s and over 30 youths lining up. The increase is mainly due to Ivor Armstrong and his British Cycling team of coaches who have been giving some excellent training advice to the youngsters. They did in fact bring them to the park the day before to give them on the course training. This is good news and makes good use of the park which stands cyclists in good stead with the council. This is the approach we need to get more kids into a worthwhile sport with the backing of local authorities.

On a very mild day and a very dry course the going was fast and Phil Dixon (SIS Trek) set off like a rocket and within 2 laps the leading breakaway four of Dixon, Lewis Craven (Wheelbase),Craig Denning (Sports Coaching) and Dave Ebbrell (Backburn CTC) had been formed.

They forged away from the rest on the 2.11 km circuit and after 12 laps Dixon had lapped all but Craven to finish 3min 33sec ahead with Denning coming in a lap down.

East Liverpool Wheelers ‘cross – Otterspool Park

Dave Brailsford claimed his first win of the season and Horwich CC’s first senior cyclocross win for some time in Saturday’s East Liverpool Wheelers promotion at Ottterspool Park. Adrian Dalgleish and Stuart Green finished second and third behind Brailsford, who seems to be regaining his form after an early season illness.

In the Youth race, Hamish Fletcher-Cooney took the honours in what looks to be like the season long battle for the title with Martin Woffindin.

Sam Turton once again took the U12 race, reinforcing his strong lead in the age group.

Eastlands Velo ‘cross at Clayton Vale

Click to view and purchase photos by DE PhotographyThe first event at a new venue and a very succesful promotion for Eastlands Velo.

Top honours in the eight lap senior race went to Ian Bibby (Science in Sport, pictured left), who, after an eventful race managed to relegate long-time race leader Rob Jebb (Wheelbase) into second place by seven seconds. Jebb had led from the end of the third lap when his leading companion Bibby ‘disappeared’ from his back wheel, with what Rob presumed to be a mechanical fault.

Third place went to Wheelbase’s Stuart Reid, whilst first veteran and fourth placed rider was David Stevens.

Martin Woffindin put 23 seconds into the previous week’s winner Gill Cycles’ Hamish Fletcher-Cooney in the youth event.

No surprises in the Under 12s event Sam Turton (Ribble Valley) took his second victory in as many events.

Wheelbase ‘cross at Outwood Park, 14 10 2006

montage.jpgA great day’s racing for 93 riders on a short but fast course that had everything!

Three events produced three very convincing winners, and some time gaps associated with the more testing ‘cross courses around!

Stuart Reid managed to consolidate his very fast start to take the honours for the promoting team in the senior event, despite a busy and long day marking the course. The youth race went to plan for Hamish Fletcher-Cooney, making the trip from Ulverston worth his while, whilst the under 12s saw a savage battle won by Sam Turton.

Some VERY PROFESSIONAL LOOKING photos are available from photographer Dave Russ on the Digital Event Photo
website. Dave’s photos are well worth the money and show how good a good protographer can make us all look – even the more ugly of us. Dave makes his living from covering events like these and we’d encourage you to splash out on those photos of you all looking so business-like so he covers more ‘cross events!

Results are HERE

A big THANK YOU from Dave H to all the NWCCA members who chipped in to help out in this first Wheelbase race, and a special thank you to Adrian Dalgliesh and Anthony Morris, who both put aside some good overall places to help an injured rider.

North West put on a show in the South West

Lewis on hillRound one of the National Trophy series took place on Sunday 8th October at a sunny and super-fast Pittville Park in Cheltenham. Here’s a fine set of photos of the senior event from Ray Pugh and Ian Packer (click image on left).

20061008_national_trophy_1_macevoy_jun_250NW result of the day came for Jonny McEvoy (Kinesis UK, pictured right), who romped away to a convincing win in the Junior event ahead of first-year junior Scott Thwaites (Merlin Development Squad) and current Junior national champion David Fletcher (Sherwood Pines/Newark Castle CC).

In the senior race, notable performances came from Lewis Craven who finished 11th, followed by Rob Jebb in 22nd and Stuart Reid in 24th (All Wheelbase).

Weaver Valley ‘cross

The new season got under way in fine style at the traditional opening venue of Northwich. Weaver Valley CC put on a great race on a fast but demanding course. The rains that fell in late August and early September were long gone and the surface was fast and dry – with the races being run off in very un-cyclocross temperatures of the mid twenties.

First blood went to current NW league champion Dave Haygarth (Wheelbase) in the S/J/W/V race, who eventually finished more than a minute ahead of early leader Dave Brailsford, who was showing off his new Horwich CC kit. Adrian Dalgleish (Lune CC) took a while to get going, but once he did it was enough for third on the day. Sean Williams finished first Junior setting out his stall early for the 2006-07 NW league.

Martin Woffindin of Eastlands Velo held off Cumbrian Hamish Cooney (Gill Cycles) in the Youth race, whilst Sam Turton (Ribble Valley CRC) took the honours in the U12 race from a promising entry of 22 riders.

Results here (MS Excel format) – click on the link above for photos by Tim Watts and Jon Williams – many thanks to both.
